The clouds were already rolling in at 8:30 AM and the temperature was a brisk 32°F. By the time the match started at 10:00 AM, the temperature was up to 35° and there was a considerable crosswind on the first 11 lanes. After we turned the corner the wind was coming from behind for the last 4 lanes. As the day continued, it actually made it up to a balmy 40-41°F and the somewhat unpredicable wind persisted for the entire match.
After the first 32 shots before lunch, there were a few shooter vieing for the lead who had dropped 5 or 6 shots due to the wind and small killzones. There were 5 targets, 10 shots, on killzones less than .5”. The difficulty rating for the course was 33.5, average killzone .8” and the average distance was 25.2 yards. The afternnon consisted of 28 shots and most shooters stayed on the pace they had set in the morning. I was fortunate enough to drop only one more shot on the day, ending up with the high score of 54/60. Mike shot a 49 for second place and to make it interesting, Dennis and Will tied for third with 46. In an offhand shoot-off on paper targets at 25 yards, it took 3 rounds to find a winner. The first two rounds were too close to call and on the third round, Dennis edged Will out to claim third. Shoot-outs are fun, especially if your not in them.
Although conditions were not ideal, it felt great to be out shooting with the guys again. Our next match is on May 5th, with the shooters meeting at 10:45 and the match starting at 11:00 AM. The 60 shots will be completed without a break. If this is too long without something to eat for some people, a sandwich or snack can be eaten on the course during the match. The fee is now $20 for the match, so that Hans can purchase awards for the match winners. Be prepared to discuss the type of awards you would prefer. I hope to see all of the regulars on the 5th, and if you can bring a new shooter, great.
Please e-mail me and let me know if you will or will not be attending the match on the 5th.
