The 2011 outdoor FT season in Canada has officially started. Twenty-five shooters took part in this sub-500fps FT match in spite of the not so optimistic forecast. As it turned out, the weather cooperated and very little drizzle fell during the match, so between the tarps and trees, not much moisture made it ground level. We did start about an hour late due to some delays, but no one seemed to mind.

Before the match began two officers from the Canadian Firearms Office visited us and toured the FT course. After some discussion, we were told what we would have to do on the course to get back to the regular power levels for CAFTA matches. All that was suggested is very doable, so we are hoping to have things in place for the nationals to be shot according to CAFTA FT Rules.

All guns were shot over the chrony and velocity was documented on the score-sheet; this took some time, but went smoothly. After the shooters meeting, groups were formed and we headed out on the course.

The Hunter Division included nine shooters and plenty of competition, with eight points separating first to seventh place. Top honours went to Tom J. who edged out Bill by one point and he in turn was just one point ahead of Dan and Marshall, who needed a shootout to decide third and fourth. A new shooter, Chris H., took the final medal for fifth place finishing just two points ahead of Tony and Dennis L. Neil did well with his new Hatsun and Mike scored well with his Crosman after the gun he intended to use shot a little too hot.

The Junior Hunter Class had four competitors, including a first time FT shooter. Snoopy performed well as did Saul and Erin, taking first and second respectively. Jarrett is new to Ft and certainly caught on very quickly, placing third. Clayton shot well with a gun shooting way under the 500 fps level, in fact, under 400fps.

There were shooters in three FT classes for this match and the Open PCP had four competing. I didn’t think Dennis E. was going to miss at all as he cleaned seven lanes in a row before dropping his first shot and finished with the top score of the day, claiming first. Don and Len followed closely, rounding out the top three. For a first time shooter, Greg shot remarkably well in this tough FT division. This was much better than my fist effort at FT.

In WFTF Piston, George shot a great score with his new HW97. Roland, who has shot hunter, shot in the FT division and scored well. Jeff was on his way to a good score, but his gun gave out early. Jeff finished the match sharing Tom P’s gun, but did not keep score because of the switch in division. I know he had fun anyway.

WFTF PCP had five competitors for this match and some good competition. Chris shot the top score in this class to take first and I slipped in at second. Ted and Tom also needed a shoot-off to decide third and fourth place, similar to the Hunter Division. Not far behind was Joel, shooting Snoopy, the little 1377 that can.

Thanks to all that helped and showed up to be a part of a great start to the 2011 outdoor season. I hope to see everyone again on June 11th at Port with the same match format.
